When an RPG respects your time (and when it's just grinding you)

Mobile RPGs have a bad reputation for stretching thin content across endless grind, but a few actually value your time. Ember Crown Saga was a pleasant surprise — the auto-battle toggle lets you skip the busywork and focus on the parts that matter.

The tell is whether progression feels earned or artificially slowed. If you're repeating the same easy fight purely to hit a number, the game is padding. If each fight introduces a new wrinkle or tests your build, it's actually designing.

Crafting systems are the other thing I watch. A good one gives you choices — combine these materials for this effect — rather than just a linear upgrade path with a paywall at the end.

Give a new RPG three or four hours before judging it. The best ones open up slowly, and the worst ones show their hand in that same window. Either way, you'll know.
